This black-and-gold hand-painted Thangka features a profound indigo background, with the solemn and sacred image of Manjushri Bodhisattva outlined in pure gold, fully showcasing the exquisiteness and sanctity of Tibetan Buddhist art.
The main deity, Manjushri Bodhisattva, is seated in the vajra position upon a lotus throne. His countenance is compassionate and serene, with eyes gently downcast. He wears a five-pronged jeweled crown, adorned with necklaces, bracelets, and anklets. His right hand holds aloft the sword of wisdom, symbolizing the cutting through of all ignorance and afflictions. His left hand gracefully holds the stem of a blue lotus flower, upon which rests the Prajnaparamita Sutra, representing the perfection of wisdom and compassion. Behind him, a radiant aureole surrounded by intricate cloud patterns and rosettes unfolds in layers, giving form to the illuminating light of the Bodhisattva's wisdom.
In the upper register of the painting are enthroned the Five Dhyani Buddhas. Flanking the lower section are depictions of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and a Dharma Protector deity. The composition is rigorously symmetrical. The stark contrast between the black background and the gold lines, with the golden lines shimmering brightly against the dark backdrop, not only accentuates the three-dimensionality of the figures but also conveys the dignity and purity of the Buddhist teachings.
