This Thangka of Green Tara, a sublime example of Buddhist art and Tibetan Buddhist art, centered on the deity who delivers sentient beings from suffering in Tibetan Buddhism, is a masterwork of traditional Thangka painting, hand-painted using natural mineral pigments. In the painting, Green Tara appears in a verdant green hue, adorned with a jeweled crown and draped in garlands of pearls and gems. She sits in half-lotus posture on a lotus throne, holding a blue utpala flower in her left hand and forming the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness) with her right, symbolizing the compassion and power to rescue all beings (fearlessness). The Three Buddhas of the Three Times above, together with the dharma protectors and bodhisattvas below, form a complete mandala realm, signifying perfect protection and blessings. The artist ground natural minerals such as malachite, lapis lazuli, and cinnabar into pigments, complemented by pure gold outlines. Through intricate layering and repeated washes, the colors are subdued, warm, and enduring—each brushstroke carrying profound devotion and showcasing the deep heritage of Thangka as an intangible cultural heritage, a testament to the richness of Tibetan Buddhist art.
